I grew up on a farm and in the suburbs, and have absorbed most of my best values from a ranch-raised mother who spent most of her time on a sheep wagon and Indian reservation. I'm a city girl and a country girl. I have been an administrative assistant, event planner, academic, and writer/blogger. Environmental and Civil Liberties/Human Rights issues dominate my life. As do delicious food and pretty places. And my cat. I just earned an MA in Cultural Studies, for which I've focused on corporate-funded "post-environmentalists" and white identity in the U.S. environmental movement.

"Nau has failed as a business. At the end of things, though, it's important to remember that there are different kinds of failures, and not all of them are tragic. To me, Nau has been the best kind of failure: a smart, creative, energized bunch of people who saw something wrong with the world, thought they saw how to do something better instead, and went for it with everything they had."
Just because things didn't work out with Nau doesn't mean that other ventures won't get funding when the economy is in better shape and and opportunity arises...

From the page: "Apparel company Nau has gone out of business.
A statement on the company's Web site home page, headlined "Goodbye for Nau," blames a "highly risk-averse" capital market for the shutdown.
"We simply could not raise the necessary funds to continue to move forward," the statement reads. "We believe this is not so much a reflection of the viability of our business, but the result of an unfortunate confluence of events.""
No! This sucks! I loved this company!!

Please stumble this. This was an anti-sweatshop protest at alma mater. The administration sounds so patronizing.
From the page:
"This was a peaceful and respectful act of civil disobedience, and I don't think academic suspension is an appropriate penalty," Kallevig said. "Last Friday, three of us went to court and pleaded guilty to our charges. We were fined $50 for trespassing, our disorderly conduct charge was dropped, and we were told if we didn't or couldn't pay the fines, which came to about $151, we could do 30 hours of community service instead."
No one was hurt in the protest, nothing was damaged in the president's office, and more than 100 people - including UM faculty and staff - rallied outside of Main Hall in support of the sit-in, Kallevig said. The other students who were arrested will be appearing in court in a few days, she said.
"I feel suspending us is not an appropriate consequence because we are acting on something we believe in morally and politically," she said. "A lot of campus feels the same way, and we are at a university that claims to educate engaged global citizens."

From the page: "The glittery retail quality of iconic department stores isn't designed to make us think of the people who work there: individuals who get up every day, ride the train to work, go to class, pick their own kids up at school, get sick. They're just magically before us, helping find the perfect shade of lipstick or bathroom rug, like extras in all of our own movies."

Trivia: one of the designers for this clothing line was the woman who posed as the author JT Leroy in public.
