Just started wearingthefuture.com and have a civil liberties blog I never wanted to start: www.sixhoursaweek.com.
My SU blog is very slanted right now towards S 1959, the "Homegrown Terrorism" Bill... Environmental and Civil Liberties/Human Rights issues dominate my life. As does delicious food. And my cat. Any minute now I will have an MA in Cultural Studies, for which I've focused on post-environmentalism/white identity in the U.S. environmental movement.

From the page: "As a cascade of recent examples demonstrates, FDA approval does not and cannot warrant a drug's safety over its lifetime. Vioxx, Celebrex, Halcion, Paxil, the weight loss pill ephedra -- the list goes on. In each of these cases, private litigation exposed risks the FDA did not foresee -- and, importantly, likely could not have foreseen -- at the time the drug was approved. Each of these cases also exposed ample evidence that the drug manufacturers did have knowledge of these risks, and did not disclose them. "
We should demand that these companies prove that their products are safe. To release them while keeping the effects secret is unacceptable to say the least.

From the page: "The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, endorsed by groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union, was brought up this week in honor of Tuesday's Equal Pay Day, established by civil rights advocates to call attention to a wage gap that has women earning on average 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. VeriChip said it will launch a direct-to-consumer marketing campaign in South Florida on April 28. The general idea appears to be to woo a bunch of retirees to implant an RFID chip (right) and connect the information with personal health records. VeriChip will pitch its wares through HEARx hearing aid stores in the Palm Beach area.
No no no no no no!! How is it possible that something like this can happen without robust debate? "Sure, let's dupe vulnerable populations into complete privacy violations first...." Ugh.

From the page: "Touted as part of the solution to world hunger, genetically modified (GM) crops have long battled political and philosophical opposition. Now a study suggests that they may encounter economic issues as well. For the past three years, researchers at Kansas State have compared Monsanto genetically modified soybean crops with an unaltered variety.
Barney Gordon, a professor of agronomy at Kansas State, said that the study began because farmers questioned why they got less output from genetically engineered crops. He found that GM soybeans produce less grain per acre and now thinks it is possible "that the modification hindered the crop's take-up of the essential element from the soil."
Aha! Frankenfoods not economically viable either! Excellent.

You have to admire Jacob -- he only wants what he can afford.
From the page: "In fact, today it is possible to get a job done by a middle class worker at a lower cost and at a lower risk than it would have been to keep indentured slaves a hundred+ years ago. It is of course true that today's middle class materially lives much better than the kings of the past. But slavery is in the eye of the beholder and it is partially (some would say solely) a question about character."

Help a sister out -- take a few minutes to take action!
From the page: "It will just take a couple of minutes. Use the Environmental Justice Foundation's online form to let a number of retailers know that you won't support them if they continue to use cotton from Uzbekistan.
The sucky thing about Uzbek cotton is that it's the product of state industry, and hundreds of thousands of kids are forced under dictatorial rule to spend their days in the fields rather than classrooms."
