I grew up on a farm and in the suburbs, and have absorbed most of my best values from a ranch-raised mother who spent most of her time on a sheep wagon and Indian reservation. I'm a city girl and a country girl. I have been an administrative assistant, event planner, academic, and writer/blogger. Environmental and Civil Liberties/Human Rights issues dominate my life. As do delicious food and pretty places. And my cat. I just earned an MA in Cultural Studies, for which I've focused on corporate-funded "post-environmentalists" and white identity in the U.S. environmental movement.

Regurgitating the report is considered reporting??
"The report details four stages of developing a vulnerable person into a terrorist, as taught by New York Police Department specialists. "Left unchallenged, it is very possible that the core terrorist enlistment message espoused over the Internet will drive more individuals in the United States all the way through the four stages of the radicalization process," it says.
So, how would it be challenged? Right now "there is no cohesive and comprehensive outreach and communications strategy in place to confront this threat," the report says. Several agencies have existing, narrow missions, but the report argues for a more comprehensive approach. "We must isolate and discredit the violent Islamist ideology as a cause worth supporting."
According to the report, new laws should be considered "to prevent the spread of the ideology." And those looking for solutions need to act "quickly and aggressively."
The report concludes: "The safety of the American people depends on it."

From the page: "
The story follows a choir of aged folk, most of whom are lovable enough to be your grandparents. They're not singing hymnals or polka, but rather Sonic Youth, Coldplay and James Brown, all under the direction of 55-year-old Bob Cilman, who comes off like a young whippersnapper in comparison. But the choir is hardly senile and lifeless. In fact, for many involved, it does keep them "young at heart."
"Young @ Heart" celebrates a segment of our society that is many times written-off and ignored in Hollywood. The more the elderly live in the movie, the more you feel like you should be doing something yourself."
The trailer choked me up, so it has to be good...

Totally a hero!

From the page: "Summary: On Hardball, Chris Matthews asserted: "Look, the war's not going to be any more popular in November. It may be somewhat OK with 30, 40 percent of the people, but it's never going to be a winner. The economy's not going to be a winner. So what do you have with [Sen. John] McCain? Integrity." But Matthews did not note his own role in promoting that image of McCain, despite numerous false assertions and inconsistencies.
'Who's the best person to run against on integrity? Hillary [Clinton]. Based upon all the numbers we have, she has a candor, an honesty problem.'"
Oh boy. Don't get me wrong, I have trouble dealing with Hillary these days, but we know that Matthews has a Hillary problem.

From the page: "Washington -- Senator John McCain's senior political strategist said yesterday that the Arizona Republican senator's presidential campaign was co-ordinating closely with the White House on a regular basis.
At the same time, McCain adviser Charlie Black said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee was keen to cast himself as independent of President George W. Bush, whose low poll ratings represent a potential liability for Mr. McCain in the runup to the general election."
I just wonder how journalists maintain access to these people? They're supposed to be separate and objective but it must be hard when you have to report ridiculous statements like these.

From the page: "A Senate committee voted Thursday to nullify a recently approved Federal Communications Commission rule that allows media companies to own a newspaper and a television station in the same market.
The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee approved a resolution that would roll back the rule, despite promises of a veto from the White House.
Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., said the resolution was meant to combat "galloping concentration" in the media."
This is good news... It's hard to keep track of who owns what and we need diverse voices.

"Records and interviews show how the Bush administration has used its control over access and information in an effort to transform the analysts into a kind of media Trojan horse -- an instrument intended to shape terrorism coverage from inside the major TV and radio networks."
