Just started wearingthefuture.com and have a civil liberties blog I never wanted to start: www.sixhoursaweek.com.
My SU blog is very slanted right now towards S 1959, the "Homegrown Terrorism" Bill... Environmental and Civil Liberties/Human Rights issues dominate my life. As does delicious food. And my cat. Any minute now I will have an MA in Cultural Studies, for which I've focused on post-environmentalism/white identity in the U.S. environmental movement.

From the page: "A college that champions diversity, he believes, must think beyond courses in gay literature, Chicano studies and feminist theory. "We should also talk about intellectual diversity," he says. So over the next year, Mr. Peterson plans to raise $9 million to create an endowed chair for what is thought to be the nation's first Professor of Conservative Thought and Policy."

Scholar William W. Keller argues that in times of wide-spread social unrest and tensions, some liberals retreat from their oversight function as protectors of civil liberties and allow authoritarian methods to be implemented in order to restore order and defend the state. Right now in Washington, DC, civil liberties activists have built a coalition that spans the political spectrum from left to right. This coalition recently managed to block legislation titled the "Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act." It was, as detailed here, lousy legislation and deserved to be squashed.

From the page: "One particularly odious e-mail from the head of VA mental health, Ira Katz, to his colleagues was headed "Shh!" and described the previously unreleased number of attempted suicides known to VA officials " 1,000 per month. It went on, "Is this something we should (carefully) address ourselves in some sort of release before someone stumbles on it?" The e-mail was written shortly after the VA told CBS that there were 790 attempted suicides in all of 2007.
A class-action lawsuit filed by veterans against the VA charges that Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder are not receiving the care they need because of enormous backlogs in benefits claims, and that many suicidal veterans have unsuccessfully sought mental health care. (A recent Rand Corp. study found that 320,000 troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from traumatic brain injuries, and 300,000 troops suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or major depression.)"

Who is McCain again?
"I think that the people should understand that I will be Hamas's worst nightmare," he said late last month in a conference call with conservative bloggers."

In 2004, however, he made headlines when, during an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case, he lambasted what he saw as the black community's failure to address a number of simmering issues such as poverty, crime and education.
Among the comments he made was, "These people are not parenting. They are buying things for their kids -- $500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.' ... They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English."
The statements received a mixed reception from black leaders, some praising him for bringing to light an uncomfortable discussion, others dismissing him as an elitist.
"He should pick on someone in his own class," author and Georgetown University sociology professor Michael Eric Dyson was quoted as saying in a 2005 New York Times article. "If he had come out swinging at Condi Rice or Colin Powell, they could defend themselves. But he's beating up on poor black people, the most vulnerable people in this nation. And why jump on them?""

From the page: "The waiting is over.
Republican presidential candidate John McCain said he will be running for president of the highest office of the land with a guy from "The Office."
At a taping of the Daily Show in New York on Wednesday, the Arizona senator gave presenter Jon Stewart the scoop on his vice presidential pick.
"You heard it here first, Dwight Schrute."
Kind of funny, but... Am I missing something?

If you read the introduction to her actual thesis you can follow where she is coming from -- not so inflamatory as Hitchens suggested. I get it.
